Transition
This month, my word is transition.
By definition, a transition is the process or period of changing from one state or condition to another. But I like to think of it even more personally—transition is the gap between what used to be and what’s going to be.
It’s the “in-between” space.
The layover at the airport.
The football drought from March to mid-August. 😂
The gap between 8th grade and Freshman Year.
The gap from one auditorium to two, from one lobby to two, from operating at 36,000 square feet to over 90,000 square feet… (Mission, those were for us. :)
Here’s what I know: these in-between times are hard.
Times of transition are disorienting because the old familiar is gone, but the new future hasn’t fully arrived yet. In transition, routines feel shaky, identity feels challenged, and control feels… slippery. If you’ve ever changed jobs, moved cities, changed schools, adjusted to a new season of parenting, or navigated a shift in a relationship, you know exactly what I mean.
But while transitions are difficult, HEAR ME…they are also dynamic! Times of transition hold unique potential for personal growth and deeper trust in Jesus.
Here’s the truth: Transitions are not just about getting you to the next thing. Transitions are about transforming us in the process.
Transformation IN the Transition
Acknowledge the grief – It’s okay to name what you’re leaving behind. Even good change comes with loss.
Stay anchored in God’s promises – Your circumstances are shifting, but His character and Word are not.
Practice Holy Habits – Prayer, Scripture, and community become lifelines when the ground feels shaky. The Stay Ready Journal often helps me in times of transition for these reasons.
Look for what’s being formed IN you – Ask, “Who is God shaping me to be in this?” not just, “When will this be over?” Remember: He is the Potter, we are the clay.
If you’re in transition right now, know this: Jesus does some of His best work in the in-between.
You may feel like you’re floating between two shores, but the One who calms storms is in your boat. The gap is not a godless space—it’s sacred ground where God meets you, molds you, and moves you forward.
As Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
So, take heart.
The transition may be the most uncomfortable place you’ve ever stood… but it might also be the most transformative.
Stay Ready,
Jon
